Spending by Chinese tourists abroad up 12 % en 2016
With an increase in 12 % of its spending abroad, China remains the largest emitter, followed by the United States, the Germany, Uk and France. Expenditure figures for the main emitting markets in 2016 reflect an increase in demand for international tourism around the world, as reported in the latest issue of the OMT Global Tourism Barometer.
"The latest data on outbound tourism spending is very encouraging. Despite the many challenges of recent years, spending on international tourism has continued to rise by 4 % and the number of international tourist arrivals has been 1,2 billion in 2016. People continue to have a strong interest in travel and this trend benefits many countries around the world in terms of economic growth, job creation and development opportunities", said the UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai.

En 2016, Chinese outbound tourism , the world's largest emitting market, remained high. Chinese spending on international tourism increased by 11 billion sun to reach USD 1 billion 261 billion, an increase in the number of 12 % (in local currency). The number of Chinese travelling abroad has increased by 6 %, to achieve 135 million in 2016. This growth consolidates China's position as the world's largest emitter since 2012, while tourism spending has since 2004 double-digit annual growth.
The growth of Chinese tourism abroad has benefited many destinations in Asia and the Pacific, Japan, in particular, Republic of Korea and Thailand, but also to distant destinations such as the United States and several European countries.
In addition to China, three other Asian issuer markets in the world's top ten have performed very well. Spending by tourists from the Republic of Korea (27 US $ billion) Australia (27 US $ billion) increased 8 % en 2016 and tourists from Hong Kong (China) recorded an increase in the number of 5 % (24 US $ billion), placing Hong Kong among the top ten issuers.
