Madagascar : Mikea Peoples, a Malagasy heritage

Monday 29 April 2024, the French Institute of Madagascar (IFM) chose to highlight the Malagasy heritage of the Mikea people.

Who are the Mikea and how do they live on a daily basis? ?

The Mikea are the last indigenous populations of Madagascar. This tribe lives in the vast expanse of dry forest which bears its name.. Mikea's forest is located in the southwest of Madagascar. Historically, the Mikea have always lived in secret since the 18th century following the invasion of the settlers. Mikea literally mentions “ doesn't want to be sued » but it etymologically means “ rebellion against civilization ».

Actually, they live in hunting and gathering in the forest. In case of illness, they resort to traditional medicine, and adults Mikea are very experienced in this field. Even for childbirth, some Mikea women still keep their ancestral technique and do not go to health centers.

Progress of awareness raising at IFM in honor of the Mikea peoples

The goal is therefore to raise public awareness of the richness of this ancestral culture and the challenges it faces.. Discussions, debates, films, books and concert with artists Mikea was set up in order to discover this people whose culture is considered to be in danger.

The program begins with one of the highlights of the program with the photo exhibition by Thierry Cron, multiple award-winning photographer. This exhibition brings together, in addition to unpublished photos, everyday objects and Mikea culture collected by Jean Claude Vinson, who has worked for a long time around Mikea and their conservation. It will be accessible to the public from 7 May until 29 June at the IFM. It will be accompanied by the presentation of the work “ Mikea-The last hunter-gatherers of Madagascar, a disappearing culture » by Thierry Cron, the 18 may 2024.
