Majunga - a city of peaceful religious cohabitation

Cosmopolitan city

Majunga - a city of peaceful religious cohabitation : One of the singularities of the city of Majunga is its multitude of peoples of #8217 diverse origins, but above all of various religions, who live and live together in complete serenity.

Madagascar's third largest city and the country's second largest port, Majunga, is a multi-ethnic mix as is rarely encountered

In the book "The Comorians in Majunga. History, Migration, riots", Indian Ocean Studies, 38-39, 2007, the author even points out that “In the sixties, Majunga is, with 30 000 Comorians, the world's first Comorian city”. This passage of history probably explains the very present influence of Comorian culture in the city of Majunga.

Muslims and their mosques

Not far from the town hall, in the Mahabibo district, stands the great Comorian mosque, long aimed at Comorian nationals, and forbidden to women. Today, it is open to all Muslim practitioners, but still does not have a prayer room for women. Recent, for their prayers, can go to the Zoma Mosque (or Friday mosque), that welcomes men and women, but in separate prayer rooms.

A large part of the Majungese population is Muslim, which explains how little pork is cooked in the city. But this does not prevent cohabitation with Christians.

The great cathedral that reigns in the city

Not far from the post offices, the great cathedral shows the infatuation and fervour of Christianity in this city. The laying of the first stone of this cathedral took place during the Second World War. Since, it welcomes Catholic practitioners, and stands out for his Mass in French every Saturday afternoon.

Its architecture that dominates the city also reflects its wealth, in terms of historical heritage. In addition to this great cathedral, other Christian churches welcome Christians in the various districts of the city.

Christians are sometimes divided between the Christian religion and customary traditions. Because many Malagasys remain animists.

Customary religion : Cult of nature and ancestors

It is not uncommon, Majunga as in other parts of Madagascar, to meet devout animists who worship nature and ancestors.

At Majunga, the Fanompoambe is the biggest meeting place of animists who practice this customary culture and religion. This is the bathing ceremony of the Royal Relics of the Sakalava of Boeny, including those of King Andriamisara.

According to these beliefs, ancestors are considered, including King Andriamisara, as intercessors between God and men. And they are revered as such. During this ceremony, the relics are bathed in the blood of specially chosen zebus. They will not return to their place until they have made 7 times the tour of the sacred place. After this great ceremony, and when there are no incidents, practitioners can request and bring their offerings to the Doany satellites.

The Doany are sacred places, often large trees that can last for centuries. They are recognized by red and white canvases that hug the trunk of the tree. People highly respect these sacred places.
