Ballast sights of Boeny - ANJOHIBE

20 km out of Mahajanga on the RN4, the 'secondary' road to Anjohibe begins at the intersection of the station Forestière de Marohogo, to the Northeast passing through the rural Communes of Ambalakida and Mariarano.

Located in 83 km north of the city of Mahajanga (3 hours drive), Anjohibe is a unique and impressive natural complex which gathers caves, underground river, natural swimming pool, waterfall, lemurs and mangroves.

Before you get there, you will have the chance to admire some natural wonders like the 'cement River' or 'River of the second strike.. Unlike its name suggests, It's not the river which is in cement, the place is rather named the shore which reminds to the 'paving' cement.

The caves of anjohibe or his real name Andranoboka occupy two hills to 2 km about one of the other, where multitudes of entries open, but the busiest entry remains the northeastern. This side, the development of the cavity is of approximately 5 330 m and the total height difference is of approximately 40 m.

At the entrance to the caves, on the side is a small cup full of small coins : any visitor is actually supposed to ask a "tso-drano.", kind of blessing to the visit of the cave goes well.

Once inside, the first word that comes to mind that is "great". : It is not surprising that the caves of Anjohibe are regarded as the most beautiful of the island. Awesome in the true sense of the word with these estates of more than several hundred meters 'rooms' and a 'ceiling' about thirty meters above the ground.

The Anjohibe caves are a network of ten kilometres made of more than a hundred of galleries. Many galleries are still unexplored and many cavities are still waiting for their first visit.
These caves are characterized by their great rooms vaults, their concretions from the finer needles to the pillars thick of several meters and also by the importance of the stalactites and stalagmites which provide a surprising beauty with a thousand times varied shapes drawing arabesques and festoons.

Between two galleries immersed in total darkness, day wells were born of the collapses, letting the light and to admire a luxuriant vegetation and also play the 'tarzan' with the vines. Through the arch, the Sun's rays give long beams of light into the cave.

Other curiosities of the caves : electrical installations and the stairs inherited from the colonial era.

A long underground river flows also in depth of the caves. A ride in a canoe is an option.

Andranojoby Lake is a true natural pool that can reach up to 2 m deep and more. Downstream, the lake water pours into a ravine in a drop of 20 m and form "the fall of Mahafanina".. An oasis of peace and greenery, the Lake is surrounded by a small forest block housing the Sifakas coquerel (known white lemurs as the sifaka).

Scientifically, the paleontological richness of the site is impressive. Various bones silicified of dwarf hippos and other witnesses of a former era have been discovered by Malagasy scientists. These bones are well-preserved and accessible to the public at Mozea Akiba of the University of Mahajanga.

Anjohibe is open from May to November.

During the visit to the caves, consider using flashlights to excellent lighting to plunge into the darkness of the cave. It is strongly discouraged to use sheets of "satrana" on fire as a torch inside the caves. Not only, the smoke can be asphyxiated animals (OWL, bats, …) who live inside the cave but leaving black spots on the stalactites.
