Malagasy literature
Interference oral and written

This is not only in the 19th century, with the introduction of the Latin script, that the history of Malagasy literature started.
Oral works, which now coexist with the written creations, have existed since the dawn of time.

In fact, at the present time, Malagasy literature evolves in three complementary directions. There are of course written in the national language, the francophone writings and oral literature which continues its path. If the first two are sometimes inspired, as well from the bottom with the form, of the latter, the structure or even the theme conveyed by it, as the case, can be influenced by modernity.

A country of deep oral tradition
Due to his seniority and to mark the difference, oral literature is currently referred to as the ancient literature (Literatioran'ny Ntaolo) by researchers and academics. The sustainability of this literature of the old is explained by the fact that Madagascar remains deeply a country of oral tradition. The verb has always played an important role in the Malagasy universe.

For the general public, to visit and inform each other, for example, proves to be much more attractive than reading that is a necessarily solitary act. Attitude which can only corroborate this statement saying that the Malagasy resolve quarrels by combat of the words. Referring to this to one of the great poems of oral literature, «Hainteny., who are true poetic games.

Malagasy civilization had known in the past an artistic expression voice and oral. The "Kabary" or traditional discourse with its word games, lyrics, phrases was and still remains an authentically recognized art. Instead of being simple illustrations images are at the centre of service delivery.

A very young literature
The real birth of the Malagasy literature is located at the beginning of this century with the publication of independent newspapers non-denominational and non officials. There was no overall than newspapers as a means of dissemination, situation which persists even today.

Nevertheless, en 1926, appeared the first collection of poems and news from Rodlish (1897-1967)and Jean Mikka (1898-1980). Three years later, en 1929, It was the turn of an anthology, work of 11 writers, including Ny Avana Mukund, Eliza Freda, etc.

Very quickly, many Malagasy were attracted by this new mode of writing and, in the 1930s, men of letters of talent proved. The most famous of them was the poet Jean - Joseph Rabearivelo. He was the true leader of the writers who were their source of inspiration in their land, that is the land of their ancestors.. Other contemporary poets have an international audience, including Jacques Rabemananjara, Flavien Ranaivo, RADO. Over the past twenty years, Michèle Rakotoson, Jean Luc Raharimanana, Charlotte Rafenomanjato and Esther Nirina emerged from the lot and are known abroad, especially in France and in the region of the Indian Ocean.
A humble edition

Malagasy literature exists, but writers who can edit their works are very few many. The publishing world does not consider the literary production as a profitable business and has no real policy in this area.

Thus, only the writers of the diaspora can take advantage of their literary talent and that awareness is not necessarily a guarantee of financial security. To be edited, There is always the draw to account of authors, but it is a situation that is far from being comfortable. Madagascar, literary critics in general do not play their role. The assessment made is not always objective. There is gap between writers and readers, or even a breakdown in communication between them and the young readership.

Malagasy writers choose the french as writing language to reach a wider audience, being understood that the Malagasy grant only limited attention to this literature with a French accent.
Some authors admit that it is easier to express in french all they can tell in Malagasy, because the language taboos imposed by society.
