Ramadan in full confinement

Ramadan in full confinement

2020 – Ramadan in full confinement. In several countries, the holy month of Ramadan began on Friday 24 April 2020/1441 (current year in the Islamic calendar). It falls in the middle of a containment period.

What is Ramadan first ?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. This calendar being lunar, the month of Ramadan shifts each year.

Ramadan fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam with the profession of faith, pilgrimage to Mecca, Prayer, and compulsory alms.

According to tradition, archangel Gabriel appeared to the Prophet Muhammad on the 27th night of the month of Ramadan to reveal the Koran to him. To celebrate this major event of Islam, fasting was established during this holy month of Ramadan in the second year of the Hegira (Islamic calendar), or in 624 of the Christian era.

And during the month of Ramadan, Muslims should not eat, nor drink, or have sex, or smoking during the day.

2020 – Ramadan in full confinement

The Muslim fast of Ramadan is impacted by the containment linked to the fight against the spread of Covid-19. Indeed, mosques are closed until further notice. And traditionally festive and large committee gatherings are limited to the same home.

According to the WHO, fasting does not put you at greater risk of contracting Covid-19. But it still recommends that the faithful who have already had coronavirus do not do Ramadan.

How to make up for the shortfall ?

The site " The Conversation gives us some clues to compensate for the lack of collective dimension of this Muslim religious rite, while we are living in the period of confinement.

  • Maintaining the link through the media and social networks.

Keeping a new light on online schedules, it is possible for the faithful to unite through prayer from home, at the same time as their relatives who are at a distance.

  • Participate in online fundraisers.

To replace the organization of fast breaking meals with mosques and associations for people in need, “alternative distribution systems that comply with health guidelines can be put in place”. Indeed, in addition to the ban on collective reunions, the problem of the potential loss of the spirit of generosity and sharing characteristics of Ramadan arises.

When the end of the month of Ramadan will take place ?

The forecast date for the end of Ramadan is estimated to be Saturday 23 may 2020, in the meantime. This is an estimate based on astronomical calculations. And if we refer to the likely end date of Ramadan 2020 / 1441 Above, Eid al-Fitr would then take place on the date of Sunday 24 may 2020. This festival corresponds to the first day of the month of Chawwal. And it also corresponds to the celebration of the end of the ramadan fast.
