Saving nature to save ourselves
Saving nature to save ourselves from climate change and coronavirus
In the face of this global health crisis and climate change, we have to save nature to save ourselves.
A well-deserved but temporary respite
Industries at a standstill, planes grounded, consumption and free-falling travel... Containment measures in most countries around the world to stem the Covid-19 pandemic have brought an unprecedented halt to economic activity. And while human beings are fighting the virus, the planet, It, enjoys a well-deserved respite.
This has effectively reduced global greenhouse gas emissions. Nevertheless, greenhouse gas emission reductions over the last three months will not solve the climate crisis that has been generated since the beginning of the industrial era.
Economic fragility
According to the World Meteorological Organization – Wmo, Covid-19 highlights impacts of climate change, particularly on vulnerable populations.
A real finding for Madagascar, which saw its daily life change in a few weeks. Indeed, the long queues for government welfare indicate an obvious economic fragility of the population.
And this population will be even more vulnerable if a climate event happens in the coming months (Cyclone, Drought, …), in a country that is already heavily affected by the effects of climate change.
Saving nature to save ourselves
Madagascar will have highlighted its natural richness in this fight against coronavirus, and the importance of medicinal plants to the population.
Therefore, conservation must be encouraged, and the sustainable management of our natural resources for the benefit of the people. Indeed, biodiversity must be at the heart of all sectoral policies and strategies in Madagascar.
WWF's Climate Change Adaptation Manager, Mampionona Randrianirina made this clear.
« We are not always aware of this, but our protected areas and community conservation areas, are natural solutions. So it's time to review our relationship with nature. Because it continues to help us meet the challenges that lie ahead in order to ensure our human and economic development ».
Protected areas do provide us with multitudes of products and services that allow us to face any crisis, particularly the one caused by climate change.
Therefore, it is high time that humanity reacted to reduce the global warming curve at the same time as the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. Failing to fight climate change can threaten human well-being, ecosystems and the economy for centuries.
