Insurrection
Madagascar was still under French colonization.
There are a 75 years, the 29 March 1947, around 10 p.m., Malagasy insurgents attacked the French military barracks of Moramanga in the center of the country. Their goal, take up arms and spread the revolt all over the island to drive the colonizers out of Madagascar. This bloody insurrection will be harshly suppressed for more than a year and will not really end until the capture of the main insurgent leaders in September 1948.
" Their objective, it's here demand for independence from Madagascar through armed struggle", Renseigne Jeannot Rasoloarison, professor in the history department of the University of Antananarivo.
En 1946, activists, the two secret societies including the Jina (Nationalist Youth) and Panama join the ranks of the MDRM party, the Movement of the Democratic Party of Malagasy Renovation which wants the independence of Madagascar.
Thus, historians believe between 30 000 and 40 000 the number of dead caused by this repression
29 March 1947 : Commemoration
Indeed, commemoration ceremonies will be held in all regions of Madagascar.
This 29 March 2022, President Andry Rajoelina leads the official commemoration ceremony, at Avaratr'Ambohitsaina Mausoleum – Antananarivo. In particular, he will perform the traditional wreath laying.
He will then have to fly to Manakara where another ceremony will have to take place..
