Next edition of the Island Games in Madagascar
The new Stade des Barea in Mahamasina will undoubtedly host the next edition of the Games of the Islands in Madagascar. It's about the 11th edition of the Indian Ocean Islands Games, and the third time they take place in the country.
After 1990 and 2007, Madagascar will host the Games of the Islands for the third time.
Four voices from Madagascar, Of the reunion, of the Comoros and the Seychelles for the holding of Indian Ocean Islands Games (JOY) en 2023. This is the result of the meeting of the International Games Committee (CIJ) by videoconference on Sunday 6 December. They have decided to attribute the organization of the eleventh IOIG to Madagascar. Mauritius and the Maldives have voted to postpone the games in 2025.
The Big Island will now organize the JIOI of 2023 after the withdrawal of the Maldives two and a half years from this great gathering of young people and athletes from the Indian Ocean. After 1990 and 2007, Madagascar will host the Games of the Islands for the third time. The first meeting related to the organization of the games in Madagascar will take place on 12 and 13 February 2020 under the aegis of the President of the CIJ, the Seychellois, Antonio Gopal.
With the choice of Madagascar as host of the 11th Games, the CIJ will see the appointment of a new Malagasy Secretary General. He will thus replace the Mauritian, Vivian Gungaram, who has held this position since it was decided that Mauritius will organize the 10th edition.
“We have already requested the organization of the Games, which was eventually attributed to the Maldives in 2019. And with the withdrawal of this country, the Big Island relaunched its candidacy and who had the choice of the majority. Compared to other islands, we have adequate existing infrastructures and those under construction. The Minister of Youth and Sports, Tinoka Roberto, as well as the government have beautiful projects compared to these JIOI of 2023 », Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko emphasized, President of the Malagasy Olympic Committee.
With state support
Madagascar's decision to host the Games of the Islands of 2023 is supported by the Head of State who made the trip during the last edition to Mauritius in 2019. "There is the will of the State in the project to organize the Games of the Islands. We are going to work in this direction to offer a very beautiful game to the sports community of the Indian Ocean region », said Rosa Rakotozafy, Director General of Sports at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The disciplines of the Games have not yet been decided. But, one thing is sure. Disciplines providing medals for the Big Island will be strongly represented. "It's good news and we have to be the first at home. The State must help us especially in the preparation of the competitions. Because the Reunionese and the Mauritians are too strong. We need a high-level training center to prepare athletes now. The new Barea Stadium in Mahamasina will undoubtedly be the scene of the opening and closing ceremonies.
