A good campaign for 2020/2021
With around 100 000 tons of annual production, Madagascar is well ahead in the ranking of the world's largest producers of lychees.
This year, the Ministry of Industry, du Commerce et de l’Artisanat has launched the litchi export campaign since 13 November in Toamasina.
For this season, Toamasina operators intend to export approximately 16 000 tons of lychees. Most productions, either 13 000 tons, will be destined for Europe. The 3000 remaining tons will be destined for other countries such as Russia, Dubai or the Comoros.
Growers see production quite good this season. And they are optimistic, wishing good business to exporters.

With its tasty pearly pulp, lychee is arguably the most popular summer fruit.
What there is to know
Lychee is a fruit native to China. It is produced by a tropical tree of the Sapindaceae family., the « Litchi chinensis ». Edible fruit, you can eat it ripe, jam or juice.
The fruit is a small sphere of 3 to 4 cm in diameter, Sometimes a little heart shaped, surrounded by a rather tough envelope of scaly appearance who takes a color pink to red.
Dangling bunches bear fruit. Each cluster has a few units to a few dozen litchis. Each small sphere is usually unique, but as the fruit comes from a flower to two carpels, It is not uncommon to find which of the two is present but atrophied or double lychees to two equal spheres.
After picking, the color of the shell browns fairly quickly but the flavor and quality of the fruit is maintained beyond this browning.
The inside of the fruit contains a pulpy part, glassy white color, fragrant and juicy, rich in vitamin C, which is actually an aril, an outgrowth produced at the level of the edge of the hilum, nurturing the seed scar.
At the center of the fruit is the single seed, oblong, Brown glossy, that looks like a small Brown of India lying. This seed is toxic and should not be consumed.
