The big island won the Orange Book Prize in Africa 2023 thanks to the Malagasy writer Michèle Rakotoson and her work “Ambatomanga, silence and pain”.

Madagascar won the 5th Orange Book Prize in Africa

As part of its commitments to culture, the Orange Foundation created in 2019 the Orange Book Prize in Africa. It works to promote African literary talents and local African publishing.. It rewards a novel written in French by an African writer, published by a publishing house based on the African continent.

And, This year, Madagascar won thanks to Malagasy writer Michèle Rakotoson. For this 5th edition, the jury awarded the award to Malagasy writer Michèle Rakotoson for ” Ambatomanga, silence and pain” published by l’Atelier des nomades.

In his novel, Michèle Rakotoson looks back on the colonial war in Madagascar through the intertwined story of two characters : Felicien Le Guen, a young Breton officer eager for adventure and Tavao, a young slave from Ambatomanga who decides to join the fight.

The trophy was presented to him during a ceremony organized at the Orange Village of the Orange Côte d'Ivoire Foundation on the occasion of the Abidjan International Book Fair.. She also won a donation from 10 000 euros and a campaign to promote his work. Bravo Michèle !

Bravo Michèle Rakotoson

Michèle Rakotoson is a Malagasy journalist and writer. She was born in Antananarivo on 14 June 1948 and completed his studies at Jules Ferry high school in Antananarivo. His father is a journalist and his mother is a librarian. She left Madagascar for political reasons in 1983 and comes to Paris to follow a DEA2. Michèle Rakotoson is also a teacher of Malagasy writing, journalist for RFI, French Culture Radio, RFO Television. She is also director of literary events for Radio France Internationale..
