5 September international day of charity.
Through the program of sustainable development on the horizon 2030, adopted in September 2015, the United Nations recognize the eradication of poverty in all its forms as the most important challenge and a prerequisite indispensable to sustainable development. This program calls to strengthen the spirit of global solidarity, particularly to the poorest and most vulnerable destination. It also highlights the role of the private sector – Since the micro to multinationals through cooperatives – and organizations of civil society and philanthropy in the implementation of the objectives of sustainable development.

These 17 objectives set out in the Sustainable Development Agenda on the horizon 2030 can be grouped into 6 action areas : the dignity, humanity, the planet, prosperity, justice and partnerships. Each of these objectives has the potential to transform our lives and our planet by providing a framework for the action of philanthropic organizations, and allow everyone to contribute to making our world a better.
Charity
Charity, as the concepts of volunteering and philanthropy, provides a real social connection and contributes to the creation of inclusive and more resilient societies. The charity can mitigate the worst effects of humanitarian crises, complete public services in health care, education, housing and the protection of children. It helps the promotion of culture, Science, sports and the protection of the cultural and natural heritage. It also promotes the rights of marginalized and disadvantaged people and spreading the message of humanity in conflict situations.
The international day of the charity was created to raise awareness and mobilize individuals, NGOs and all the players involved in the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities.
The date of the 5 September was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the disappearance of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Prize for peace in 1979 "for his work made in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress., which are also a threat to peace. »
Who was Mother Teresa ?
Mother Teresa, Agnès Gonxha Bojaxhiu of his real name, is a religious and Catholic missionary born in 1910. En 1928, She travelled to India where she risked her life to the service of the poor. En 1948, She acquired Indian citizenship and founded the congregation of the missionaries of charity in Calcutta in 1950, who became famous for his action in favour of the poor and the dying of the city.
For more of 45 years, she nursed the poor, the sick, orphans and dying while guiding the development of the missionaries of charity, first in India and then in other countries, including establishing hospices and shelters for the poor and the homeless. The work of Mother Teresa has been recognized and praised all over the world and she has received several awards and distinctions. She died on the 5 September 1997, at the age of 87 years.
The charity and the objectives of sustainable development
The United Nations recognizes that the achievement of sustainable development cannot depend only of Governments and civic engagement, like volunteering or Philanthropy, plays a crucial role to transform our world.
This commitment can take many forms :
- Educate the public and Governments to the challenges of global issues
- Build trust between various groups
- Social and cultural barriers, and create cohesion between the members of society
- Building resilience through community actions and develop a sense of responsibility to the community
