Sector wood energy 4 500 HA to reforest

Project ADIAFO (ALA sy Ajariana Diovina ho Fandrehitra ho year ' ny Olona), funded by the European Union, 4 500HA are in reforestation over a period of four years at the level of 11 municipalities in the two districts of Ankazobe and Ambohidratrimo, located in the region of Analamanga. The objective is to increase the potential wood energy to meet the needs of the population of Antananarivo and its environs while improving the living conditions of distributed on target populations 132 fokontany.

Commissioned by the German federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and development, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH runs a program whose goal is to break this vicious circle. In the Diana region North of the country, about 3 000 rural households have reforested 9 000 hectares of degraded lands with species of fast-growing trees. These new exploitable forests, on which households hold land rights, have to reduce erosion and bushfire and allow soil degraded to regenerate. In addition, all of the wood energy sector has been upgraded : Since the sustainable wood production, through its efficient transformation into charcoal and its marketing to the use of coal in households improved in cities. Thus, 50 000 hectares of natural forest could be preserved from destruction.

To start, 2 500 plants have been in Earth over an area of 2,5 HA in the municipality of Ampanotokana, Ambohidratrimo district. Two tree species, namely robusta Eucalyptus and Acacia leptocarpa, popularized by the project, During this campaign for reforestation because of their rapid growth and their adaptation to the agro-ecological context of the intervention area, has been learned. What is reforestation ?

Why reforest ?
Planting trees is really necessary in order to preserve the environment and improve living standards, for the following reasons :

• They preserve the soil of erosion due to runoff ;

• They preserve the drying up water sources ;
• They purify the atmosphere ;
• They help to fight against climatic disorders ;
• timber export sales are increasing.
