The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the 22 December 1992 resolution A/RES/47/193, which declared the 22 March each year “World day of water”, from the year 1993, in accordance with the recommendations of the United Nations Environment and Development Conference (UNCED).

A plan of action for the twenty-first century.
The resolution invited States to devote this day depending on the national context, by implementing actions such as the awareness of the public through publications, broadcasts of documentaries, the organisation of conferences, round tables, seminars and exhibitions related to the conservation and development of water resources and the implementation of the recommendations for Action 21.

Theme of the day 2016 : Water and l ’ employment.
Water is an essential element of life. It is not only vital for health, but also d ’ jobs to meet the economic development, social and human.
Today, half of the workers in the world – 1,5 billion people – are employed in sectors related to water. Most of the jobs, across all sectors, depend directly on. However, the indelible link between water flow and l ’ employment, millions of people who depend on water to survive are not fundamental labour rights.
The theme of this year focuses on determining the role played by water in the creation and the support ’ quality jobs.
