It is towards the end of the years 1970 that FAO (a United Nations food and Agriculture Organization) instituted the 21 March International Day of the forest in order to promote the importance of the various functions of the forest ecosystems of the world.
Deep in the Woods !
The objective of the actions carried out in the context of the international day of the forest is to educate the public on the benefits provided by our forests, such as supply of wood, protection against natural hazards, place to relax, refuge for many species, so that they are recognized and valued at fair value.
Theme 2016 : "Forest and water".
International forest day provides a platform to raise awareness on the importance of all types of forests and trees in general.
Forests cover about a third of the planet and they play a fundamental role in global and national economies. Nearly 1.6 billion people, more from 2000 indigenous cultures, depend on forests for their daily subsistence and survival in the long term.
Forests are ecosystems richest in terms of biodiversity. They contain more than 80% species of animals, plants and insects on Earth. Forests also provide shelters, jobs and security for the populations that depend.
Yet, Despite all these valuable benefits ecological, economic, social and health, We are destroying the forests that we need to survive. Global deforestation continues at an alarming rate : 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed every year. Deforestation is responsible for 12 to 20 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to the warming of the planet.
Forests and water in the spotlight.
Each year, on the occasion of the international day of forests, We celebrate the forests and trees, that cater to our needs and have a protective function. This year, emphasis is placed on the critical role of forests in the supply of the populations of the world in freshwater, indispensable to life.
To mark the day, a joint celebration of the international day of the forests and the world day water will be held Monday 21 March 2016 (from 10 to 13 hours) in the economic and social Council Chamber, at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York.
The event entitled "the forest and the water. – Support life and livelihoods"will raise awareness the interconnections between forests and water and their contributions to the implementation of the Programme for sustainable development on the horizon 2030.
This event is organized by the Secretariat of the United Nations Forest Forum (UNFF) and UN - water, in collaboration with the Government of the Sweden.
