An hour for the planet: 19 March 2016 by Hôtel★★★ Restaurant gourmand Coco Lodge Majunga.

The operation “an hour for the planet” restarted this year, hopes to mobilize Saturday 19 March 2016 millions of people around the world. Between 8:30 and 9: 30 pm (local times), the greatest monuments will be switched off in turn, and citizens, communities, companies, Governments are also invited to turn off their lights for one hour. The aim of this initiative of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is to remember that energy consumption has a cost to the planet and to encourage Governments and individuals to act on climate. Fossil (coal, gas, oil), used especially in the production of electricity, are responsible for 3/4 greenhouse gas emissions, the cause of global warming.

Earth Hour is one of the biggest global environmental actions: one hour, thousands of cities plunge their monuments into darkness, making a sign for better protection of climate. Millions of individuals and companies participate each year in this event. Earth Hour is held for the tenth time in 2016.

The event was held the first time in 2007 in Sydney (Australia). During this edition, the operation had collected two million people. Since 2009, the city of Brussels participates in the event by turning off at the time: the lights of the Grand-Place. The Atomium will also participate in the action by turning off the illuminations of his balls.

How to participate ?
To participate, just turning off the lights in his home, Saturday 19 March 2016 from 20:30 to 21:30. The STIB has announced that it will participate in this initiative and will decrease the intensity of the lighting in 49 metro stations this 19 March.

An operation which is also festive.

This 10e edition will begin in Fiji and then will then win the Asia, Europe and America. “Earth Hour helps each – through a friendly event, interactive campaigns or social networks – to participate in the history of climate change”, explains Siddarth Das, Global Director of operation. Users are invited to make known their actions and contribute to awareness of climate problems on the net. For Pascal Canfin, Director general of WWF France, “the worst thing would be that closes the parenthesis COP21 and continued as before.

Commitments must be maintained and quickly consolidated to make 2016 the year of consistency”. By an agreement concluded the 12 December, the international community is committed to maintain global warming “well short of 2 degrees” compared to the pre-industrial era. The operation is also festive, with a collective yoga session, a picnic in a park or a recycled fabric fashion show organised in Australia, dishes prepared at the restaurant on fire of a fireplace and enjoyed the glow of candles in France, a dinner by candlelight in Finland…
