Rapport 2017 UNCTAD : Towards the development of intra-African tourism
In Africa, four out of ten international tourists are Africans. And two out of three tourists come from the continent of Sub-Saharan Africa., according to this new report.

African tourists are poised to become the engine of tourism in Africa, according to the new report 2017 UNCTAD (The United Nations trade and Development Conference), entitled “Tourism at the service of transformative and inclusive growth”. In Africa, this sector has grown significantly as the number of tourists on the continent has doubled from 24 million in 1995-1998 to 56 million in 2011-2014. Export earnings also tripled, ranging from 14 billion USD to 47 billion USD for the same period. Stabilities at the political level, public health and security leading to peace are necessary because it is linked to tourism. Reception and road infrastructure as well as air or other interconnection between countries in the African region, must also be developed for better flow of tourists”, said Joël Randriamandranto, the PCA of the ONTM.
Note that African tourists are starting to choose the destination Madagascar. “Many of them visit national parks. African countries thus represent a market for the Big Island. And the arrival of the Ethiopian Airlines company which provides direct flights on the network throughout Africa, in addition to Kenya Airways and Turkish Airlines, contributes to the development of intra-African tourism”, concluded Toky Rabeson, the Director General of Tourism Development within the Ministry of Tourism.
