Sustainable alternative to charcoal

In Madagascar, near 80 % homes still use charcoal. This for their daily energy needs, and especially for cooking. This dependence on charcoal is one of the main causes of deforestation on the island.. This contributes to the destruction of precious ecosystems.. However, a sustainable alternative is emerging : ecological coal, made from waste such as plant residues, plastics and papers. This innovation was at the center of discussions during the “ Matchmaking Event National » in Andrainarivo.

Sitraka Rakotoarivony, coordinator of TWENex Development Aid project, stressed that the use of ecological coal or biogas can significantly reduce the exploitation of forest resources. This approach not only preserves forests, but it also contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions 28 %. By thus bringing a direct benefit to the fight against climate change.

Ecological coal, economic potential and the challenges to be met

Beyond its environmental benefits, ecological coal represents a real economic opportunity for Madagascar. The waste management and renewable energy production sector is still largely underexploited, and the introduction of solutions like eco-friendly coal could boost the local economy. It offers considerable potential for job creation in waste recycling and alternative fuel production. In addition, it could attract investments in clean technologies and contribute to the diversification of the country's economy. However, so that this ecological transition can be achieved on a large scale, several challenges remain.

It is essential to put in place financial and political support. This is to facilitate the production and distribution of these new fuels.. Similarly, it will be necessary to raise awareness among local communities of the advantages of ecological coal and provide them with easy access to this alternative. Despite these obstacles, Madagascar is making progress towards a sustainable transition, where environmental protection and economic development go hand in hand, and where innovation in waste management plays a key role for the future.
