The web has made its appearance there 25 years ! Thank Sir Tim Berners-Lee and the other pioneers of the Internet for making the world more open and more connected.

The Internet has revolutionized the world of computers and communications like nothing else before. The invention of the Telegraph, the phone, radio and the computer has paved the way for unprecedented capabilities integration. The Internet is both a worldwide broadcast capability, a mechanism of distribution of information and a means of collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers, whatever l ’ geographic location.

The Internet is one of the most successful examples of the benefits of investment and commitment supported in the research and development of information infrastructure. As soon as the first research on packet switching, the Government, industry and universities were partners in the development and deployment of this exciting new technology.

Tim Berners-Lee, a British physicist, has invented the web at CERN in 1989. Originally, the project, called "World Wide Web", has been designed and developed to allow scientists working in universities and institutes from around the world exchange information instantly.

The first website created at CERN - and in the world - was intended for the World Wide Web itself project. It was hosted on the computer NeXT to Tim Berners-Lee. The site described the main features of the web and explained how to access documents other people and how to set up your own server. The NeXT computer - the original web server - is still at CERN. En 2013, CERN began returning to service the first web site, and even restored the web site to its original address.

The 30 April 1993, CERN has put the World Wide Web software in the public domain. Then he issued the next version of the application under a free license in order to accelerate its diffusion. By giving free access to the software needed to run a web server, as well as to the browser and associated code library, He helped develop Web.
