The sights of the BOENY - MAROVOAY

Marovoay, which literally means “Many crocodiles” is located in 94 km to the South-West of Mahajanga town. The town of Marovoay is the ancient capital of the Sakalava Kingdom of the Boina.

Marovoay was chosen for its location : built on the banks of the Betsiboka estuary to some 70 kilometres inland. The city benefits from an exceptional communication channel to the channel of Mozambique. From Mahajanga, you will see from the top of the surrounding hills these huge areas flooded during the rainy season, grid by a multitude of dams and channels.

Crocodile hunting was in the early 20th century an important activity in the region and the city has adopted this lizard in its coat of arms.

The plain of the Betsiboka bass has been highlighted under colonization and became one of the granaries to rice of Madagascar, whose production was partly exported to Europe. This region is essentially populated by migrants from several regions of the country looking for a salaried job and, subsequently, land.

Marovoay plays an important economic role in agriculture of Madagascar through its vast plain fitted out for the rice intensification. The rice plain of Marovoay occupies 72,76% all of the areas irrigated the boeny Region with 17 500 HA of area. It's the second Madagascar rice granary.

Tourism, Marovoay allows the observation of beautiful landscapes of rice fields. The descent of the river Betsiboka is a change of scenery for lovers of adventure and discovery (bird watching, crocodile...). You will find boats to stroll on the river loaded with gold and Red Earth. The Tandrava Hill which dominates the city and the vast plain of Marovoay offers a panoramic view breathtaking.

Also, the city of Marovoay has managed to keep its beautiful doors and windows indo-Arab. Even today, some colonial type houses are standing despite the wear of time. And don't forget the famous market of zebu of Friday.
