World press freedom day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1993 After the holding of the seminar for the development of an African press independent and pluralistic.

This seminar took place in Windhoek (Namibia) en 1991, and led to the adoption of the Windhoek Declaration on promoting independent and pluralistic media.
The Windhoek Declaration required the establishment, maintaining and promoting a pluralistic press, free and independent and focused on the importance of a free press to the development and preservation of democracy within a State, as well as for economic development.
