International Whale Day #MyMadagascar #MahajangaMaVille

international whale day.

International Whale Day is celebrated every year on 19 february worldwide.

In addition, this day is also dedicated, par extension, to the protection and defense of all marine mammals.

It should be noted that in 1982, the hunt “commercial” to cetaceans could have been banned by the International Whaling Commission. But this subtlety of language still gives the possibility to certain countries to continue their hunt for purpose “scientist” and the fight of the defenders of the whales is therefore far from being won (poor science !).

You should know that cetaceans are defenseless against harpoons, despite their giant dimensions and for the shipowner, all shipping costs are covered by a single whale killed. Since the 17th century, industrial hunting of marine mammals is practiced and it is only when several species have completely disappeared and the population of others has dropped significantly, in the middle of the 20th century, that conservationists have acted in the interests of the defense of whales.

Fortunately, the population of some species began a slow recovery following the entry into force of the moratorium on commercial hunting.

However, Japan has applied since 25 years of its famous hunting program for scientific purposes, sparking protests from nature conservationists. Indeed, Japanese whalers exterminate more than 800 cetaceans covered by this program. Their meat is then sold in supermarkets or served in restaurants..

At a time, the Soviet Union's whaling fleet was the most powerful. But it was dismantled when Russia gave up commercial whaling, because it had then become useless. Note that for small populations in the North, who practices traditional Aboriginal hunting, an exception was made, because for them whale meat is the only means of survival and hunting is thus practiced in accordance with the quotas established by the International Commission.

Nowadays, more than one hundred species of marine mammals are counted and the mission of the researchers aims to multiply their population as well as to protect them.

The battle of whale protectors is far from over !

At present there are more than one hundred species of marine mammals. The mission of researchers is to save them, but also to multiply their population.

Madagascar, we have Cetamada which is a non-profit Malagasy association founded in May 2009, we'll tell you about it tomorrow …
