Ankarafantsika : “Congratulations to our heroes ! »
Currently, bushfires and forest fires rage in Madagascar, in Mayotte, and elsewhere. Even the national park of Ankarafantsika, in Mahajanga, was hit by flames. It took several days to bring the fire under control. The authorities and conscientious villagers mobilized and managed to extinguish the flames. Ankarafantsika : “Congratulations to our heroes ! ».
They managed to put out the fires
Late in the evening, the Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD), Baomiavotse Vahinala Raharinirina announced on her Facebook page, fire extinguishing in Ankarafantsika National Park. “Thank you to our heroes ! », she writes in this publication. Six hundred people, including teams from MEDD and the national park, villagers, soldiers, mobilized in this nature reserve to put out the fires.
Lack of wrestling equipment
It took five days to control the fires in this park. “The strong wind, dry weather, favored the rapid spread of fires”, indicated the Minister.
The lack of bushfire extinguishing equipment makes it difficult to fight against these fires. These are tree branches that were used to put out the flames. “We lack equipment to put out fires. Without canadair and without water bombing helicopter, the areas burned increase. We need to invest in the purchase of one or two water bombing helicopters. We could consider pooling these helicopters”, she explains.
Three burned areas
The West was prey to fires, these last few days. Baomiavotse Vahinala Raharinirina, indicated, yesterday morning, that the fires devastated three areas in the west of Madagascar : the national park of Ankarafantsika, the forest station in Marohogo, and at the kilometer point 30 on the national road 4.
Around a hundred hectares of forests were consumed by fires in the Boeny region national park, according to estimates from local sources. The fires, Visibly, intentional fires, have been, also, observed in the east of Madagascar, ce weekend.
Practicing slash-and-burn cultivation, peasants set fires on hills. The strong wind didn't help matters. The fires were spreading, increasing the devastated areas.
“We will have to wait until the end of the month to determine the areas burned, in this month of September. For the month of August, the fire points were lower compared to August of last year”, indicates a source from the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development. The fires won't stop there. They will increase in the world, and Madagascar will not be spared, according to the minister.
Let’s all apply “zero tolerance” !
Baomiavotse Vahinala Raharinirina does not go out of her way to say that her department will no longer control the fires alone. “We need mass mobilization… Everyone must apply “zero tolerance” in the fight against fires”.
