22 May 2017: Biodiversity and sustainable tourism.
International Day for biological diversity, organized annually by the green wave, is an opportunity to raise public awareness and to provide answers to its questions about biodiversity.
En 2009, emphasis had been placed on the invasive alien species, say EEE, which is one of the biggest threats to biodiversity and ecology.
To make it simple, an EEE is a living organism, animal or plant, who settles in a natural environment that is not hers, him colonizes, thus disrupting the natural balance of the area. The example of the algae Caulerpa taxifolia is famous: accidentally implanted in the vicinity of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, It invades the seabed, destroying all the other species in its path.
“The most effective and feasible control method is prevention. To succeed, This strategy requires collaboration between Governments (…), and international organizations.” The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon
The diversity of species, ecosystems and landscapes promotes tourism and economic growth. Conversely, a well-managed tourism sector can contribute to reduce the threats to biodiversity and maintain or even increase key populations of wild animals thanks to the income generated.
The theme of this international day of biological diversity is an opportunity to highlight the importance of the contribution of sustainable tourism to economic growth than to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
The theme of this day was chosen to echo the year 2017 – International year of sustainable tourism for development – and offer the opportunity to contribute to initiatives such as the Sustainable tourism program.
Why is there an international day of biological diversity ?
Biological diversity is increasingly recognized as an asset world of inestimable value for present and future generations, but certain human activities continue to greatly reduce the number of species.
The Convention on biological diversity is an international legal instrument for "the conservation of biological diversity., the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources"which has been ratified by 196 Parts.
Taking into account the importance of education and public awareness in the implementation of the Convention at all levels, the General Assembly has proclaimed the 22 may as international day of biological diversity (RES 55/201), date of adoption of the text of the Convention.
