Each year around the world celebrated the international day of peace the 21 September. The General Assembly has stated that this day would be dedicated to the ideal of peace-building, both within countries and between peoples.

For 2016 the theme of this day is : The objectives of sustainable development, components of peace.

The 193 States members of the United Nations adopted unanimously the 17 sustainable development objectives at a historic Summit, which brought together international leaders in New York in September 2015. The new program for 2030 encourages countries to undertake activities to achieve these objectives in the course of 15 next years. The goal is to put an end to poverty, to protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all human beings humans.

The objectives of sustainable development are an integral part of peace-building in our time, as peace and development are interdependent and synergistic.

“The 17 Sustainable Development Goals represent our common vision of the future of humanity and a social contract between the world leaders and citizens” has said Secretary general Ban Ki-moon. “They summarize what we need to do for the planet and humanity and the key to success”.

The issue of long-term sustainability to worry about the basic needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The current challenges of poverty, hunger, the decline of natural resources, the scarcity of water, social inequalities, the degradation of the environment, diseases, corruption, racism and xenophobia, among others, posed a threat to peace and form a fertile ground for conflicts. Sustainable development contributes decisively to dismiss and eliminate the causes of conflict and is the basis for a lasting peace. On the other hand, peace allows to strengthen the conditions necessary for sustainable development and to release the necessary resources for the development and prosperity of society.

Each of 17 sustainable development objectives is a centerpiece in the global peace. It is imperative to obtain the means to ensure the realization, including financial resources, the development and transfer of technologies, the capacity-building, as well as the implementation of partnerships. Everyone is affected and everyone should contribute.

The international day of peace was established in 1981 by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Twenty years later, en 2001, the General Assembly decided, by a unanimous vote, It would be a day of non-violence and ceasefire.

The United Nations calls on all nations and people to respect a cessation of hostilities during the day and in some way to mark the activities of information and awareness of the public on subjects related to peace.

The 16 September 2016, from 9 h to 9 h 30, the Secretary-General has celebrated the international day of peace in the garden of peace at the United Nations Headquarters by ringing the peace Bell and observing a minute of silence. The laureates of the Nobel Prize of peace and messengers of peace of the United Nations will be invited to take part in the ceremony.
