A political choice affirmed in favor of Petite-Terre

The unanimity obtained within the Departmental Council marks the end of a long political and territorial series. For more than 30 years, the long runway project animates discussions and divides Mahorais elected officials. This time, the deal is sealed : the Petite-Terre site will host the infrastructure.

This consensus was a prerequisite required by the State, as Manuel Valls recalled during his recent visit to Mayotte. The former voice of the government insisted on the need for a clear local choice for the file to move forward. Hélène Pollozec, departmental advisor, summarized the state of mind of the elected officials : “Let’s stop the nonsense and get to work. » A firm tone which reflects the impatience of a territory to initiate the transformation promised for too long.

Petite-Terre stands out as a natural and strategic site

For the elected officials, the long track can only be in Petite-Terre. The reasons are multiple : technical feasibility, lower environmental impact, consistency with the existing. “It’s a debate about 30 ans », recalls Ali Omar, 3ᵉ vice-president of the Departmental Council ; “The track has always been there. »

The consensus is also based on a new reading of ecological issues : sensitive species mentioned in the past, like the dugongs, would no longer be present in the area, according to the declarations of elected officials. On the other hand, the president of the Citizens' Collective of Mayotte, Safina Soulou, affirms that researchers have already carried out studies and insists on the urgency of prioritizing the safety of populations rather than relaunching environmental expertise.

This choice comes as President Emmanuel Macron is expected on the island. He had promised concrete progress before the end of his first mandate. The elected officials, them, believe the countdown is over : procedures must begin now.
