The international civil aviation day was established in 1994 the significant activities
the 50^e anniversary of ICAO. En 1996, on the basis of an initiative of ICAO and with the assistance of the Government of the Canada, the General Assembly of the United Nations officially declared the 7 December day of international civil aviation in the United Nations system.

The goal of this day is to raise global awareness of the importance of civil aviation international for the socio-economic development of the States and the unique role of ICAO in helping States to cooperate and to put a truly global fast transport network at the service of all humanity.

The United Nations and the countries of the world have adopted the agenda 2030 and launched a new era of sustainable development on a global scale, aviation as an engine of global connectivity has never been as important to the objectives of the Chicago Convention, as international flights are now considered to be catalysts of peace and prosperity in the world.

Theme of the international civil aviation day

Every five years, on the anniversary of ICAO (2014/2019/2024/2029/etc.), the Council of the organization adopts a special theme for international civil aviation day. Between these years of birthday, the representatives on the Board to choose a single theme for the interim period of four years.

For the period 2015-2018 inclusive, the Council adopted the following theme :

"Working together so that no country is left behind"

The civil aviation authorities, schools and other groups could use the posters and other visual media provided by ICAO to highlight and celebrate the theme of international civil aviation day.
