The international organization of la Francophonie (OIF) is an institution based on the sharing of a language, the french, and common values. It brings together 80 States and Governments whose 57 members * and 23 observers *., present on five continents. The latest report on the French language in the world (2014) establishes to 274 million the number of french-speakers.
The OIF leads policy actions and cooperation in accordance with the large tasks drawn by the Summit of la Francophonie : promoting the French language, multilingualism and cultural diversity ; promote peace, democracy and human rights ; support education and training ; support the economy in a sustainable development perspective. In all of its actions, the OIF pays special attention to young people and women, as well as access to digital.
Cornerstone of the institutional system, the Secretary General of the Francophonie manages the OIF. It leads the political action of the Francophonie, which it is the spokesperson and official representative at the international level. She is responsible for the animation of francophone multilateral cooperation funded by the single multilateral fund. Michaëlle Jean is the Secretary General of la Francophonie since January 2015.
THE OIF, Headquartered in Paris, has four permanent representations : in New York and Geneva (to the Nations United), in Addis Ababa (with the African Union and the Economic Commission for Africa of the United Nations), in Brussels (to the European Union) ; as well as five regional offices (West Africa, Central Africa and Indian ocean, Asia-Pacific, Caribbean, Central and Eastern Europe) located respectively at Lomé (Togo), Libreville (Gabon), Hanoi (Viet Nam), Port - au Prince (Haiti) and Bucharest (Romania). It also relies on the Institute of la Francophonie for sustainable development based in Quebec City and the international Committee of the games of la Francophonie.
Francophone multilateral cooperation is conducted in conjunction with the Parliamentary Assembly of la Francophonie and the four operators of the Summit : the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), TV5Monde, the Senghor University in Alexandria, the International Association of francophone mayors (AIMF).
