About UNDP

Madagascar : Towards self-sufficiency
An organization of the Malagasy civil society, Association Anja Miray, operates a community forest reserve, by eco-tourism to create jobs and support social infrastructure such as schools, clinics and centres of environmental education.

"Before our initiative., This vast territory was cleared each year for the cultivation of maize. Local people hunted the maki to enrich his protein diet. This has completely destroyed our environment "., says Victor Rahaovalahy, founder and President of the association.

Today, the fame of the forest attracts tourists from all over the world. En 2011, Anja Miray received 12 000 visitors and generated 45 000 dollars for the association. "With revenues of ecotourism and the sale of hand-made items., We could build two schools for our children and pay the salary of teachers., Adds Victor.

The initiative has been selected among 800 other candidates and awarded the Equator Prize 2012.
Ecotourism has also generated substantial income for farming methods alternative and permit new investments in agriculture, Fisheries and nurseries, contributing to the food self-sufficiency of the community.

The association was founded in 2001 with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Programme of the GEF small grants to increase awareness of communities to the economic interest to protect their environment. Eleven years later, L'Association Anja Miray has used his experience and was chosen, on 800 candidates, the Equator Prize winners 2012.

The Equator Prize, a partnership led by UNDP, between Governments, civil society, companies and community organizations, aims to draw attention to the efforts of local actors to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. It is awarded every two years to 25 communities around the world. Each winner receives a prize of 5 000 $. Among them, 10 are selected for a "special reward" and a sum of 20 000 $.

The 20 June, Anja Miray representatives visited the Brazil to receive their award at the Rio + 20 Summit.
