UE : Financing electrification and sustainable development projects in Madagascar

France and the European Union are more committed than ever to supporting the Malagasy government by financing two structuring projects. These projects will allow better access to electricity in rural areas and the promotion of more efficient agricultural practices., sustainable and remunerative, while ensuring the conservation of forest ecosystems.

The Angovo project

The Malagasy Government and the French Development Agency (AFD) yesterday signed two financing agreements in favor of the Rural Electrification Development Agency (ADER) , in the project context “Energy” in co-financing with the European Union. The objective is to electrify 130 localities in the Androy regions, Anosy, Menabe, Melaky, and South West.

Actually, 35 000 households and 3000 businesses will have access to renewable electricity. This project, registered in the EU Global Gateway, which promotes investments in quality connectivity infrastructure, in a conducive regulatory and governance framework that respects the highest environmental and social standards. The total amount of this project “Energy” is estimated at 33,2 million euros financed by the European Union (11,2 million) and France through AFD (22 million).

The big project

An amount of 40 million euros is also reserved for the talaky be project which aims to support 6 years and in 25 communes of the Anôsy region, adaptation of agriculture and community resilience to climate change. IIt aims to promote remunerative agroecological practices, to protect and restore soils, springs and forests, to strengthen territorial and social cohesion, via participatory approaches, communal facilities, promoting gender and improving nutrition. Conservation and protection of the environment are at the heart of this action which also aims to preserve the ecological corridor of the New Protected Area of ​​Beampingaratsy.
