Lonely Planet Founders Receive UNWTO Lifetime Achievement Award
Tony et Maureen Wheeler, the founders of the famous editions Lonely Planet, received the thirteenth UNWTO Lifetime Achievement Award. This prize is awarded each year to personalities who have given decisive impetus and made a major contribution to the world tourism sector..
Lonely Planet was a great source of inspiration, around the world, for travelers, writers and the tourism sector in general, and that is the main reason why the UNWTO Lifetime Achievement Award went to the Wheelers.
The couple founded Lonely Planet publishing in 1972, after a trip to Asia. These 40 last years, their guides have sold more than 100 million copies, in English and other languages. Lonely Planet has also made inroads into many other branches of the universe of voyage, including a television series and a travel website, which was awarded.
Beyond Lonely Planet Editions, Tony and Maureen's action took on yet another dimension as part of the foundation Planet Wheeler. It currently supports more than 50 projects in developing countries, mainly in Southeast Asia and East Africa, that focus on poverty reduction.
