Sustainable development : green coal against deforestation by Hotel★★★ Gourmet restaurant Coco Lodge Majunga
Reforestation aims to put at the disposal of the village communities of forest resources for exploitation and processing in coal.
The reforestation of eucalyptus in the DIANA region began in 1996.
Today, the replanted area is 9 700HA. It is on the eucalyptus plantation sits the wood energy sector modernization according to the Germano-Malgache program for the environment, PGM-E/GIZ.
The coal comes from the carbonization of reforested eucalyptus. It currently covers 30% Antsiranana city domestic energy needs and 15 to 20% for the DIANA region.
It takes a replanted to surface 20 000 HA to cover the needs of all the DIANA who is 30 000 tons of coal per year.
Eucalyptus camaldulensis is of particular interest to the Colliers. It resists fire and according to the engineer-framer Ankitsakalaninaomby testing center, the cut tree regeneration is fast, offering over twice (at least) wood to exploit.
Christian Andriamanantseheno, Director of ECO DIANA, Technical Advisor of the PGM-E/GIZ explains "the CIRAD research." (Center for International Cooperation in agronomic research for development, EDITOR'S NOTE) are underway, You can't tell at the moment if the reforestation of eucalyptus camaldulensis kills the ground or does not kill the ground".
At the beginning of the reforestation program, 30 species have been tested, only two have stood.
Two species have been identified, but predominantly eucalyptus camaldulensis.
Revaluation of the land bare
Reforestation aims to put at the disposal of the village communities of forest resources for exploitation and processing in coal. It is these communities who choose reforestation sites. The plots are bare and their use does not compete with agriculture or farming. The use of plots provides medium-term tenure security for these villagers. From the environmental point of view, reforestation slows or even stops the soil degradation and attenuated the progression of the lavaka (huge crevasses).
The goal is in addition to creating 'pools of supply' wood-energy, resources that can be exploited in a sustainable manner. The reforestation of eucalyptus helps mitigate the farms and the destruction of natural forests.
