The General Assembly of the United Nations has approved to proclaim 2017 International year of sustainable tourism for development. This decision follows the recognition by world leaders, United Nations Conference on sustainable development (Rio + 20), What a 'well designed and well organized tourism' can contribute to sustainable development in its three dimensions, to the creation of jobs and business opportunities.
The decision to proclaim 2017 International year of sustainable tourism for development comes at a particularly important time, one where the international community embraces the new program of sustainable development on the horizon 2030 and the objectives of sustainable development (ODD) approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations in September.
Tourism is among the targets of three of the ODD, namely the ODD 8 : Promote sustained economic growth, shared and sustainable, full and productive employment and decent work for all ; the ODD 12 : Establish sustainable consumption and production ; and the ODD 14 : Conserve and sustainably exploit the oceans, the seas and marine resources for the purposes of sustainable development.
