22 March 2023 : New in Malagasy

This 22 March 2023, the Malagasy people celebrate the new year 2023, known as “Malagasy New Year”. And this, since the 16th century, in the royal era of King Ralambo. Happy New Year to all Malagasy.

New in Malagasy : History

The Malagasy New Year refers to the first day of Alahamaibe, more precisely the traditional Malagasy year. Encore, it is the first moon of the calendar year.

The Malagasy new year has no fixed date,the calendar to determine the months, days and times is a lunar calendar. And according to the Gregorian calendar, the last day of the year 2022 was yesterday, and this day, Wednesday 22 march the new year 2023. Taombaovao Malagasy was first celebrated during the time of Ralambo, a king of Madagascar in the 16th century. And during the reign of Ranavalona III, the malagasy new year was celebrated on his birthday : the 22 November. The Malagasy New Year is a ritual of forgiveness, of sharing and wishes of prosperity. Indeed, it is an occasion of reconciliation and greetings. Unfortunately, that the minority knows of the existence of this event.

New in Malagasy 2023 : To the program

The official opening of the event took place yesterday, Tuesday 21 March 2023 at Ambohidrabiby. The ceremony of “Unquenchable fire” where the campfire marked the beginning of the cultural event. Which will be followed by the “CLEANING” or purification ritual. Without forgetting the various games properly Malagasy but also the traditional music : the VAKODRAZANA.

All participants also took advantage of the streetlights yesterday (write a letter) to illuminate the surroundings of the royal palace of Ambohidrabiby. As it is a New Year's Eve, entertainment went on all night, until dawn. And for this day, Malagasy New Year's Day, the FIDIOVAMPIRERENA or national purification will be the most important step.
