Father Pedro : 55 years of love for Madagascar

The Akamasoa community celebrated yesterday, Friday 19 September 2025 The 55ᵉ anniversary of the arrival of Father Pedro in Madagascar and his 50 priesthood.

Father Pedro : Half a century of engagement for Madagascar

Akamasoa's cultural space yesterday welcomed a double celebration in honor of Father Pedro Pablo Opeka : its 55 years spent in Madagascar and its jubilee of 50 priesthood.

The tribute paid to Akamasoa and its founder marked half a century of priestly and humanitarian commitment. Ceremony shows a route that continues to transform the lives of thousands of Malagasy families.

Who is Father Pedro ?

Father Pedro is a Lazarist priest, Who like Sister Emmanuelle in Cairo or Mother Térésa in Calcutta. He is of Slovenian origin by his parents, who flee communist repression in 1945. Father Pedro is the "priest of discharges", that Emmanuel Macron decorated during his visit to Madagascar this year.

He created the Akamasoa humanitarian association in 1989 to help the smaller people who lived in the streets. His goal was to get these people out of the inhuman places where they lived, so that they lead a human life in dignity.

At the service of the poorest, Father Pedro built 22 Villages offering decent housing, schools, Social training and infrastructure centers.

His actions extend far beyond Antananarivo, with locations in Vangandrano, Tolagnaro, Varika Island et Beloha.

International recognition

Beyond borders, Father Pedro's work has received international recognition.

En 2019, Pope Francis had visited Akamasoa, monitoring 2025 by the French presidential couple, testifying to the universal scope of this initiative born in the service of the most deprived.
