Community management : a common benefit

A common benefit for nature and populations

For more than 20 years, Conservation actors such as WWF trust the community management of natural resources. A good example encouraged by Coco Lodge Majunga. Community management : a common benefit for nature and populations.

Until today, This form of natural resources management exists. And It has made it possible to preserve unique natural resources against various destructive practices as “It is entrusted to people who know the environments, who live there and have direct stories and interests with resources”.

“In return, Nature gives the opportunity for members of the community to learn and build projects for local development " Affirme Appolinaire RAZAFITANAND DU WWF.

«Clothing Clothing»

The basic community, ou «a group of millions" en English, is an association made up by voluntary members of a local community around a space where natural wealth is located.

It is through a natural resource management transfer contract on the forest and/or fishing administration that the community becomes manager. He is governed by Gelose law (Secure local management) in September 1996.

By the way, some communities, helped by other civil companies and public actors have established visions, texts and laws on the management of natural resources in particular. This is the case in Ambaro Bay which has a guide on sustainable mangroves management.

On the one hand, Local communities monitor and protect natural resources by preventing poachers, the illicit cup, deforestation, Resource traffic ... for example, FUP Batan has dismantled illegal charcoal burners. Through its patrols and/or the sanctions imposed by managers communities, There are therefore fewer illicit practices against natural resources.

On the other hand, Communities value and restore natural resources. The ecotourism model to promote Kvalo mangrove forests west of Madagascar is proof of this. Dans le corridor Bedding, more than 6,700 ha of forest areas have been restored. Deforestation has gone from 2,58% to 1%. And communities' income has increased by 30% thanks to sustainable production systems in June 2018.

Support of technical and financial partners

Technical and financial partners support these catering projects, sites. WWF intervenes here by providing technical supports and sharing good practices to members of the community :

  • How to undertake to improve income and create jobs to depend less and less and not abuse natural resources ?
  • How to manage natural capital ?
  • What tools to develop ?
  • How to value natural resources ?
  • And how to make a common benefit for the community itself and for nature ?

Value their work at a fair price

We know today that more than 1 400 community management contracts of natural resources covering more than 2 million ha are established between the administration and the basic communities.

We must now recognize and enhance their work at a fair price. Especially since community management is experiencing difficult phases, among others : raising awareness of an entire population which has already been dependent on natural resources, the sacrifice of its members to go to work for a result which will probably only be palpable in years.

Members of local communities also often face dangerous poachers. And often, They are powerless in the face of insufficient means and support in the face of the guilty of illicit practices released, and disappointed because the financing of projects are insufficient.

Faced with these circumstances, Local communities stand on their commitment and passion. In support, support work is a pillar that allows local communities to grow and make their members grow. And this despite the difficult circumstances. For this, "You have to dialogue with them, know local practices and understand their needs. This is an important step in looking for a compromise and deciding together which initiatives are to be developed to help local communities to the maximum " Affirme Appolinaire RazafimaTananarive.
