SOLIDARITY MOBILIZES FOR TOAMASINA FOLLOWING GEZANI

When the wind destroys, solidarity rebuilt. After the passage of cyclone Gezani, Toamasina heals his wounds, carried by the momentum of the Malagasy heart.

Toamasina hit hard by cyclone Gezani

In the night of 10 February 2026, intense tropical cyclone Gezani made landfall in Toamasina, main port of Madagascar. The winds, estimated between 170 and 180 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 250 km/h on the coast, have sown desolation.

Roofs were torn off, fragile homes collapsed, trees were uprooted and power lines severed. Intense rains, locally exceeding 100 etc. one 24 hours, caused significant flooding, isolating certain neighborhoods and slowing down the arrival of help.

The latest provisional report shows 38 dead, six missing, 374 injured and more than 264 000 disaster victims. More than 18 000 houses were destroyed, thousands more damaged or flooded. Behind these shocking figures, These are entire families who have lost their bearings, their property, sometimes their loved ones.

National and international mobilization to support disaster victims

Faced with the extent of the damage, the Malagasy State has urgently activated several financing mechanisms. The devices REPAIR, CIRCLE, CERP and ARC were thus mobilized. The objective is to accelerate humanitarian aid and infrastructure rehabilitation.

As part of the REPAIR project, more than 11 million USD were mobilized to finance concrete actions :

• Cash for work programs for cleaning and repairs,
• Emergency cash transfers,
• Nutritional supplements,
• Support for housing rehabilitation.

Near 139 400 households should benefit from these measures.

The United Nations System has unlocked 5 million USD via the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). This aid aims to support affected populations. It is implemented in coordination with the National Office of Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC).

Beyond institutions, solidarity is expressed everywhere. The MIFOHA Association organizes clothing drives, blankets and basic necessities. The sporting world is also involved. Faneva Ima Andriatsima calls for unity around a strong message : « A jersey = a gesture. Let's play together to help the victims of the cyclone. »

Urban communities, notably Antananarivo and Mahajanga, invite everyone to contribute according to their means. Mobile money operators also facilitate donations for the benefit of the BNGRC. All transactions are fee-free to make every contribution count.

From Majunga to Toamasina : the same impulse of heart

From Majunga, we deeply feel the pain of Toamasina. When we touch one of our cities, it’s all Madagascar that is wavering. But it is also all of Madagascar that is rising.

Despite the losses, the inhabitants show admirable courage. Neighbors helping each other, families welcome each other, young people participate in cleaning operations. Malagasy resilience cannot be decreed : she lives, on the ground, every day.

Cyclone Gezani left visible scars. But it also revealed something essential : the strength of our unity.
