Goodnight, THE SAVED SMILE

In Mahajanga, Madagascar, Goodnight, a child of 7 years old affected by a rare tumor saw his destiny changed by an exceptional chain of solidarity. Thanks to Mission Zanaka, to the Lions Club Majunga, to the The Club Majuga Babe Babe. and the mobilization of multiple associations, Soafaly was able to undergo surgery in France.

He is saved, but the call for generosity continues.

A crossed destiny of a child and determined volunteers

In Mahajanga, northwest of Madagascar, Soafaly has always lived with a bright smile despite a heavy ordeal : an extremely aggressive orbital tumor, rare and threatening, distorting his face and having already caused him to lose the use of his left eye.

It is in this context that the members of the The Club Majuga Babe Babe., accompanied by their sponsor club, the Lions Club Majunga, cross his path during a humanitarian mission. Quickly, they alert the dermatologist Dr Anna Mazuy, volunteer of the Mission Son, association law 1901, chaired by Patrick Maupetit, active from Occitanie -France- and working every year in Madagascar.

The diagnosis is final :

• Aggressive tumor, invading the sinuses,
• Total loss of vision in the left eye,
• Very high risk of severe meningitis,
• Vital prognosis committed in the short term.

Yet, the child radiates joy and courage, commanding the admiration of the Lions Club Majunga teams, the Léo Club Majunga Baobab et de Zanaka.

Malagasy doctors, lack of suitable equipment, confirm that only specialized care abroad can save Soafaly. The Lion Surgeon Dr RAKOTONDRAIBE Willy Francis officially attests, allowing complex administrative procedures to be initiated : passport, permissions, visa, medical transport, welcome in France.

For four months, Mission Son, the Majunga Lions Club even finances a home teacher, so that Soafaly learns to read, write and speak French, he who had to leave school because of harassment linked to his illness.

Thanks to unprecedented mobilization, the child finally gets on board thanks to the essential support ofAviation without borders, specialist in humanitarian transport since 1980.

Nice : the medical battle and the rebirth of Soafaly

Arrived in Nice on 30 August, welcomed in particular by Dr Mazuy and the AMC06 volunteers, of the Malagasy diaspora, and even by the host Julien Lepers, Soafaly discovers a new universe, but united around a single mission : save him.

The CHU de Nice and the Fondation Lenval join forces to set up an exceptional protocol :

• IRM, scanner, doppler,
• Multidisciplinary assessment,
• High precision surgery,
• Pediatric follow-up, psychological and rehabilitation.

The Dr Arnaud Martel, orbital surgeon, supported by the Dr Ryad Adrar, carries out the operation in mid-September. The tumor is removed completely. A huge victory.
Despite some infectious complications, the team remains optimistic : “The post-operative infection is now well stabilized”, assures Dr. Martel.

During his hospitalization, Soafaly enjoys unique moments. Like the Clowns' visits to the hospital, Blouses Roses, Pirate Blanc, support of the school unit... He deeply marks the teams with his courage and his smile.

His convalescence requires constant presence and a safe environment. It is therefore hosted in France, entrusted to several volunteer families. Like the members of AMC06, Franco-Malagasy volunteers, health practitioners, Aviation without borders, local associations (CCMCA Nice, FPMA Nice, Nice Adventists, …). Everyone watches over him, while his family in Madagascar sees him every day on video.

Thanks to this multifaceted solidarity, Soafaly heals, regain confidence. He discovered the Côte d’Azur, learn to read, to write, and become a child again.

An exemplary chain of solidarity… but an urgent appeal remains

This humanitarian mission has a cost : near 40 000 €.
Thanks to solidarity, this amount has already been greatly reduced. However 20 000 € still missing to cover unavoidable costs.

Volunteers contributed significant amounts of their own money.
The GENOYER Foundation, committed for years to the health of children around the world, has already made a major contribution.
The Lions Club Majunga, the The Club Majuga Babe Babe., the Rotary, and many anonymous people responded.

But so that the mission is fully funded and so that future Zanaka missions are not compromised, everyone is called to contribute, even modestly.
