Spotlight on maritime security

En 2002, the IMO endorsed a new mission statement, taking note of the evolution of its priorities, the watchword “For safer navigation and cleaner oceans” becoming “Security, safety and efficiency of shipping on clean oceans”. This new formulation was better suited to the broader goals of the Organization and provided a blueprint for action. By choosing the theme of the world day of the sea of this year, We wanted to highlight the special importance given by IMO, lately, maritime security.

While natural hazards are not lacking at sea, everyone knows today that navigation is also exposed to the risk of crime at sea and the scourge of international terrorism. Unfortunately, This phenomenon is nothing new. At the end of the years 70 already, the IMO had to deal with the sinking, the illegal capture of ships and their cargo or other forms of maritime fraud. Since 1982, IMO to monitor the development of piracy and robbery armed for vessels, in different regions of the world, and has taken measures to combat this phenomenon in the most affected areas.

After the drama of the Achille Lauro in 1985, where terrorists had seized an Italian cruise ship and killed a passenger before negotiating their retirement, IMO has begun to develop a set of technical provisions to prevent unlawful acts against passengers and crews on board ships, This resulted in March 1988 the adoption of the Convention for the Suppression of unlawful acts against the safety of maritime navigation (SUA Convention) and its Protocol on offshore platforms.
