China removes tariffs in Africa, including Madagascar

This decision is a game-changer for African entrepreneurs. It opens a new chapter between Africa and China, with Madagascar which is part of it.

A wide open door for 53 African countries

From the 1May er 2026, China removes tariffs on imports of 53 African countries. The Chinese president Xi Jinping confirmed the announcement. This is a major milestone for trade between China and Africa.

African products will enter the Chinese market without tariff barriers. A measure which extends a system already applied to 33 country, including Madagascar. Alone In Swat is not in the list.

Africa's leading trading partner, China thus consolidates an already dynamic relationship. En 2025, bilateral trade reached more than 348 $ billion, growing. This decision sends a strong signal to African entrepreneurs. It aims to strengthen trade and open up new opportunities in the Chinese market.

Beyond the figures, it is a message of economic openness. An invitation to export more, to gain visibility and take advantage of a market of 1,4 billion consumers.

Madagascar : the opportunity for a new lease of life

For Madagascar, this announcement resonates as a real strategic opportunity.

En 2024, trade between the Big Island and China reached approximately 1,68 $ billion. Malagasy imports far exceed exports to China. They mainly concern machines, textiles and vehicles. Malagasy exports remain dominated by minerals, vanilla and seafood.

With the removal of customs duties, these products could gain in competitiveness. Malagasy vanilla is already famous throughout the world. Seafood products also benefit from better access. Certain mining resources could also more easily conquer the Chinese market.

The real challenge will be to create local value. It will be necessary to diversify the offer and modernize production. On-site processing needs to be improved. A commercial opening is an opportunity, you still have to know how to grasp it.
