The Catholic Church offers the whole world to celebrate World Day of peace on January 1 since 1968, at the instigation of the Pope, Paul VI. His successors continued this celebration and, also, while Jean-Paul II, that Benedict XVI, held to mark the entry into the new year in a solemn way. Pope François has, with its own style, picked up the torch.

Message for the world day of peace

At the beginning of a new year, that we welcome as a grace and a gift of God to humanity, I would like to address to every man and woman, every people and every nation of the world, the heads of State and Government as well as leaders of various religions, my fervent wishes for peace, I accompany my prayer so that stop wars, conflict and the many suffering caused either by the hand of man or by old and new epidemics such as the devastating effects of natural disasters.

I pray in a special way so that, meet our common vocation to collaborate with God and all men of good will for the promotion of harmony and peace in the world, We know the temptation of behave us unworthy of our humanity. […]

Listening to God's plan on humanity
The theme chosen for this message recalls saint Paul's letter to Philemon, in which the Apostle asks his assistant to welcome Onesimus, formerly a slave of Philemon and now became a Christian, and therefore, According to Paul, worthy of being considered a brother. Thus, the Apostle of the Gentiles wrote : "It withdrew you for a time to you be made for eternity"., no longer as a slave, but much better than a slave, as a dear brother ". (PHM 1, 15-16). Onésime became brother of Philemon by becoming Christian. Thus the conversion to Christ, the beginning of a life of Discipleship in Christ, is a nouvellenaissance (CF. 2 Co 5, 17 ; 1 P 1, 3) which regenerates fraternity as founder of family life and Foundation of social life.

When, in the book of Genesis (CF. 1, 27-28), We read that God created man male and female and blessed them, so that they grow and multiply, He made Adam and Eve of the parents who, by completing the blessing of God to be fruitful and multiply, generated first brotherhood, that of Cain and Abel. Cain and Abel were brothers, because they come pari breast, and so they have the same origin, the same nature and the same dignity as their parents,created in the image and likeness of God.

But the brotherhood also expresses the multiplicity and the difference that exist between brothers, Although linked by birth and having the same nature and the same dignity.
