The international literacy day 2015 has the theme "literacy and sustainable societies..
Literacy is a key driver of sustainable development. Reading and writing skills are a prerequisite to a wider body of knowledge learning, skills, attitudes and values needed to create sustainable societies. At the same time, the progress made in the field of sustainable development, for example in health and agriculture, contribute to the advancement of literacy and the literate environments.
«New technologies»., including mobile phones, offer new opportunities for literacy for all. We need to invest more, and I call on this day all States and all our partners to redouble their efforts - political and financial - to be fully recognized as one of the most powerful accelerators from sustainability literacy. The future we want to start with the alphabet.
Director-General of UNESCO
This year, the celebration of international literacy day will therefore focus on the study of the synergy and the essential links between literacy and the future objectives of sustainable development which will be adopted during the 70th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, in September 2015.
