The 12 December 1996, United Nations General Assembly invited Member States to observe the international day of tolerance the 16 November each year by activities aimed at educational institutions in the public (resolution 51/95).
This measure was in response to the the United Nations year of tolerance in 1995, proclaimed by the Assembly the 20 December 1993 (resolution 48/126). The General conference of the United Nations Organization for education, science and culture proclaimed the year 1995 Year of the United Nations for tolerance. The 16 November 1995, the Member States of UNESCO adopted a Declaration of principles on tolerance and a Plan of action designed to provide follow-up to the year.
UNESCO provides ten tracks of actions to fight against intolerance :
1. Diversity within your community
Where you live, you'd be probably surprised the extreme diversity that exists within your community. Someone said that each culture is a set of sustained influences. Indulge in a survey on cultural diversity within your city or community. Who are the people ? How do they live ? Articles, interviews, posters or exhibits can be used to highlight the diversity of identities and cultures. How this diversity is reflected in music ? Think about the multiplicity of dances and traditional musics that you know and what they denote mutual influences. Organize a concert or a festival bringing together a range of these cultural traditions.
2. The human rights
How the rights of members of national minorities, ethnic, religious, linguistic or other are guaranteed within your community, your nation, in your area ? What is the Aboriginal peoples, migrant workers, asylum seekers and refugees, for persons with disabilities ? Are their rights promoted and protected ? Do you think that those responsible for the policing of your community are adequately informed of the human rights ? What can you do to improve the attitudes or behaviour towards minorities ?
3. Set its action in favour of tolerance
Write yourself a project or programme of activities in favour of tolerance. This implies to determine for yourself what is the tolerance and what is the best way to transmit the values attached to. Go to sift your textbooks, television broadcasts and newspaper articles for ferreting out stereotypes (including gender) and prejudices about nationalities and ethnic groups. What priorities would you assign, of tolerance, in your city, country or region ?
4. Say no to violence
How was born the violence in a community, a school or a home and how can we stop it ? Reproduce the dynamics of tolerance and intolerance by role-playing games, dialogues, resolution of misunderstandings exercises. Organize public debates where you train to defend alternately two opposing views. How do you imagine the peaceful coexistence of individuals and groups ? That is what makes it work and that can undermine the ?
5. Ecological and human diversity
Any community is based on the interdependence. No more plants or animals, We cannot survive if we were all the same. Find examples of this truth drawn from the daily life of your locality. Show by concrete examples how a culture of peace and tolerance can promote the preservation of the environment. Start a project in your school or your neighborhood.
6. Religious tolerance
Organize a meeting of representatives of various religious groups, and non-denominational in your community to examine how each teaches tolerance. How is taught tolerance in the various religions of the world, including those of indigenous peoples ? All religions are more or less based on values of love and justice, None cannot be invoked to justify violence or war. Dialogue and discussion between the representatives of the various religions are an age-old tradition that has not lost its value.
7. News of tolerance
Organize discussions on the current events analyzed in terms of tolerance and intolerance. Think about the conflicts of the past and those of today. How could they be resolved or avoided ? What about the question of human rights in the news today ? What are the fundamental rights and freedoms recognized by the international community ? How to work the multilingual and multicultural countries ? What are the common peoples interests in their diversity ?
8. Tolerance and sport
What sporting events have an international dimension ? What is the purpose ? What are the possible links between sport and intolerance (exclusion of the weakest, parochialism, violence in stadiums) and how to fix ? Organize an athletic meeting on the theme of diversity and tolerance.
9. Creativity at work
The message of a work of art is inexhaustible. Query the work of an artist from a different region of the world and ask yourself what it brings you. Design stories, parts, poems, songs, articles, paintings, posters, photographs or videos illustrating the themes of tolerance and publish them or deliver them. Write to personalities known to pose questions and share your ideas on the subject of tolerance.
10. International linkages
Boot an international dialogue or start a school twinning by letter or e-mail project. Chat with foreign correspondents on the issues and problems of your everyday life. Swap tapes or photos. Study the possibility of participating in international summer internships or a school exchange programme. Ask your school to join the UNESCO associated schools system.
