Tomorrow 12 AUGUST : Day international youth
“The youth is the future of man”

The objective of the international youth day is to promote, especially among young people, the Global Programme of action for youth to the year 2000 and beyond. This program encourages the youth in ten priority areas : education, employment, malnutrition and poverty, health, environment, addiction, juvenile delinquency, hobbies, girls and young women, and full and complete participation of youth in the life of society and decision-making. Action in implementation of the program at the national level, regional and global there is also recommended.

Youth, that under the United Nations criteria correspond to the age group 15 to 24 years, represent a sixth of the world population. The majority of these young people and women living in developing countries and their number is expected to increase substantially in the 21st century.

It is in 1991 that young people gathered in Vienna (Austria) for the first Global Forum of youth organized by the system of the United Nations proposed to establish an international day of youth. The Forum recommended that such a day is celebrated in partnership with youth associations in the more specific objective to organize promotional activities and fund-raising to support the United Nations Youth Fund. En 1998, by a resolution adopted at the first World Conference of Youth Ministers – held by the Portuguese Government in collaboration with the United Nations in Lisbon of 8 to the 12 August 1998 – the 12 August has been declared international youth day. This recommendation was subsequently endorsed at the fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly by the adoption of resolution A/RES/54/120, in date of 17 December 1999 entitled "policies and programmes involving youth"..
