Meets nature
Nosy Mangabe, 15° 30's, 49° 46' E, also called Nosy Marosy, is a tiny island with an area of 5,2 IMP. She bathes in the largest Bay in Madagascar, Antongil Bay and is located five kilometres, South of the town of Maroantsetra. It is an island which is part of the National Park of Masoala. A park created in 1997 and that has become the largest protected area of the big island with its 2 355,8 km². It is a place conducive to ecotourism and sustainable tourism where we can appreciate the richness of the fauna as well as the endemic flora of Madagascar.
Nosy Mangabe has still a tropical forest and a very rich flora. You can admire and visit the surroundings with the Evergreen forest called "Lohatrozona"., the coastal forest «Tampolo» and the flooded forest of Andranoalana. The fauna is composed of five species of lemurs, including the famous Aye Aye ; and several species of reptiles including the Uroplatus Fimbriatus, the camouflaged lizard and snake Colubrid Pseudoxyrhopus Heterurus. 39 different species of birds have been recorded on the island whose 7 species of herons.
Flora :
The island is covered with a moist Evergreen forest of low altitude. The island would have been, There are two centuries, severely affected by deforestation. The height of the canopy reaches 35 m on deep soils. Typical types are the Canarium, Ocotea, Ravensara, and Diplazium. More aloft, Epiphytic ferns are common.
Wildlife :
The diversity of species of Nosy Mangabe is reduced, but given its insularity, reptiles are particularly abundant. These include the Uroplatus fimbriatus and Brookesia peyrierasi Chameleon. The Pseudoxyrhopus heterurus Colubrid has identified three times on the island which constitutes the only known locality.
39 species of birds have been recorded on the island including Pratincole lays its eggs on the granitic rocks from the sea. Note the existence of a Heronry housing on the islands located to the South of Nosy Mangabe, 7 species of herons (including Ardeola idae).
Lemurs are represented by the common Brown Lemur (Lemur fulvus albifrons), the Rufous Mouse Lemur (Microcebus rufus), the great Cheirogale (Cheirogalus major) as well as by two species introduced, the Lemur vari (Varecia variegata) in the years 1930 and Aye Aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) en 1966.
An island full of history
If "nosy" means island, «manga» means in Malagasy blue, the fruit of the mango tree or of slaves and 'be' to designate a dimension.
