En 1994, the General Assembly of the United Nations has decided to make the 9 August international day of indigenous people (resolution 49/214).
This date marks the day of the first meeting of the Working Group on indigenous populations of the Sub-Commission on the promotion and protection of human rights in 1982.
The goal of the Decade is to strengthen international cooperation to solve the problems faced by indigenous people in such areas as human rights, the environment, development, education and health. The Coordinator of the Decade is the Office of the High Commissioner of the United Nations in the human rights.
In April 2000, the Commission on human rights adopted a resolution on the establishment of the Permanent Forum on indigenous issues, which was approved by the economic and social Council the 28 July 2000. (E/RES/2000/22). The Permanent Forum should provide advice on issues relating to social and economic development, for human rights, to education, health and the environment.

This year's theme aims to highlight the importance of access to care for indigenous peoples, while improving their health remains a major challenge, not only for themselves, but also for Member States and United Nations. The United Nations celebrated the international day of indigenous people
This day, celebrated internationally each year the 9 August, to become aware of the cultures of indigenous peoples and the diversity they represent. It is also an opportunity to redouble their efforts to address issues of exclusion, discrimination and poverty that still are the daily reality for many of these populations.
In the message addressed to this opportunity, the Secretary-General states that indigenous people are home to the United Nations. Noting that there are many who continue to be victims of discrimination, the marginalization, deep poverty and conflict, and even to the extinction, Ban Ki-moon urged the international community to mobilize emergency, guided by the fundamental principle of the full and effective participation of indigenous peoples.
This year, the High Commissioner for human rights invites the General Assembly to urgently adopt the Declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples. Also urges States and the international community as a whole to pay particular attention to include issues concerning indigenous peoples in the programmes for the reduction of poverty whereas these communities are still among the poorest.
On this important day that calls for joint action, UNEP wants to remind that indigenous peoples are particularly vulnerable to climate change. He also wants to reaffirm the importance of the knowledge, cultures and ways of life traditional for sustainable development, as well as the management of the environment.
