Visit of the Anjohibe caves

Located in 80 km from Majunga, the path that leads to the Anjohibe caves is in itself an adventure full : three hours drive “secondary”. To get there, departing from Majunga, take the N4 to kilometre point 19, the height of the Marohogo forestry Station where there is a small junction on the left : direction Ambalakida. A very small Panel indicates “THE CAVE” … must have good eyesight !!!

Next stop : the commune of Mariarano which surely includes the best tourist sites of the region : Mahafanina falls (see our story), the beautiful natural pools and especially the Anjohibe caves. But before you get there, you will have the chance to admire some wonders of nature as the “Lake cement”. Unlike its name suggests, This is not the Lake which is in cement, location is rather named the shore that is reminiscent to the “paving” cement as say so the inhabitants of the region.

Once arrived at Anjohibe, the first question that arises is : where lies the famous caves ? It is true that the entry does not mine pay. And as it does y no indication, you will have little chance of finding an entry without a guide. You should know that the Andranoboka caves occupy two hills has two kilometres about one of the other, or open concourses of entries, but the busiest entry remains the northeastern. This side, the development of the cavity is of approximately 5 330 m and the total height difference is of approximately 40 m.

pt54615Anyway, without guide, It is strongly discouraged to venture into these galleries that are real labyrynthes… You should know that Anjohibe is a network of a dozen kilometers composed of more than one hundred galleries. Worry still, you will never have the chance to see all of these galleries, many remain unexplored and many cavities are still waiting for their first visit.

To return to the entry : first impression, a little apprehensive seeing these first columns of limestone that are stalactites. On the big rock of entry can also read a few gribouilles left by inspired tourists in the memory of their passage. Just on the bottom side a small bowl filled with small pieces of currency : any visitor is actually supposed to ask a “TSO-drano”, kind of blessing to the visit of the cave goes well. Incursion now in the half-light dela cave; you need to know you'll have beautiful employ the best of flashlights, It is not enough. Nothing beats a small improvised natural torch made with the satrana dry burning. Small note : Once you are in the cave you can hardly make rear mahine then think to take a maximum of satrana to be short and not having to finish your journey to grope in the dark. But rest assured when even if you did call a guide it will take the amount of “torches” necessary according to the path you have chosen.

Once inside we forget everything. Anyway the calm that y reign contributes widely. -Side temperature, the contrast is also striking, humidity makes look particularly nice compared to the sweltering heat of the outside. Anyway the caves are quite airy, and lovers of calm and wild nature will be filled, delighted by the recreational possibilities and appeasement of these caves.

Madagascar-anjohibe-caves-05In any case, Once indoors, the first word that comes to mind is “grandiose” : It is not surprising that the cavities of Anjohibe are considered the most beautiful of the big island. Grandoise in the true sense of the word with these successions of “rooms” more than several hundred metres and a “ceiling” about 30 metres above the ground. In this regard, do still pay attention to some stalactites whose tips are very sharp. Between two galleries immersed in total darkness, We appreciated especially the day wells born collapses, letting the light and where you can enjoy lush vegetation and allows you to play in the “Tarzan” with lianas. Other sights also : These electric facilities inherited from the colonial era ; It is true that the Anjohibe caves were already known since . Another vestige of the past also these stairs more than rusty iron which the State encourages you to do a little prayer before you engage. Finally, last curiosity but not of the least : a small look at the “ceiling” you sometimes reserve of small surprises, Indeed, It is often the place chosen by the bald mice for shelter : at first, This looks like small black spots on the limestone, but to see more closely in the light of satrana brûlé, There are many one “dormitory” some colonies of bald mice well aggripees, completely insensitive to the passage of the visitors.

There are still other wonders to explore in the corner, but unfortunately the time (and our reserve of sheets of satrana) We were counted this time. But the next, We'll be sure to make you discover the snakes , lesnombreux birds in the avens, as well as freshwater turtles and small rodents.

These caves are one of the largest tourist assets of the region majungaise, the officials and local operators have become aware of this state of affairs. To participate in the rehabilitation of this heritage best, during the last World Tourism Day held this year in Majunga, the site of Mariarano was after Antsanitia, the destination to which were invited Prime Minister, the Minister of the environment and the journalists present at the event. Evidence that things are evolving.
