Little story about Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is the celebration of lovers ! Valentine's Day is a traditional celebration in Anglo-Saxon countries., but it has only experienced real development over the years 80.
The Feast of Lupercales and Valentine's Day
The Romans celebrated the Lupercales of 13 to the 15 February. It was a feast of purification, symbol of sharing where a goat was sacrificed in a cave to symbolize fertility. It was also in honor of the god of herds and shepherds and marked the end of winter.
En 494, Pope Gelas first will ban this holiday. He takes Valentine's Day as patron saint of lovers and establishes a day to pay tribute to him : the 14 February !
Who is Valentine's Day or Valentine of Terni ?
Tarnished Valentine, better known as Saint Valentine is a monk who refused to submit to Emperor Claudius II The Gothic. At the time, Emperor Claudius II wanted to ban marriage to prevent men from being tempted to stay with their fiancées rather than go to war. Valentine of Terni continued to marry couples and challenged the authority of the emperor. He was then imprisoned ! It was there that he met his jailer's daughter : Julia, a blind girl.
She asked Valentin to describe the world to her. Through meetings and exchanges, they fell in love until a miracle happened : Julia regained her sight ! We shared and relayed this miracle everywhere.
So much so that Claude II The Gothic, who didn't like Christians, decided to sentence Valentin de Terni to death. He then became a martyr and will be considered as Saint Valentine by Pope Gelas I who decided to honor each 14 February, en 494.
Who are the three Valentine's Day ?
The first valentine would be a Catholic priest named Valentin who decided to secretly marry lovers. He was discovered and sent to prison until his death. For some, martyr Valentine's Day, who was beheaded in 269 in Rome, was confused with another Valentine celebrated on 14 February : Bishop of Terni in Umbria. This saint known for his healing gifts to young girls and young men.
Rhetia's Valentine's Day is celebrated mainly in Germany. He lived in the fifth century. And he is depicted with an epileptic child lying at his feet.
What is the “valentinage” ?
The custom of “valentinage” was born into the English aristocracy in the late Middle Ages. A young girl was associated with a young man and during the day, they had obligations to each other. The Valentine and his Valentine had to secretly give each other small gifts and be nice to each other.. This custom arrived at the Court of Savoy, then it spread to neighboring regions. The “valentinage” was enriched by the sending of Valentine’s Day poems.
