St. Patrick's Day History

Saint Patrick is the founder of Christianity in Ireland. He was kidnapped in the 4th century by pirates and sold as a slave to an Irish druid. Subsequently, he became a shepherd. He escaped a few years later to the Normandy coast and studied theology in order to become a priest.. Then he went to the monastery located on the Lérins Islands for 2 years. Following this experience, en 411, Pope Celestine I ordered him to return to Ireland to evangelize the inhabitants. Since, the death of Saint Patrick is celebrated on 17 March 461.

Legend has it that Saint Patrick is one of Ireland's most famous patron saints : According to the legend, he brought Christianity to the island, made the shamrock fashionable and freed Ireland from snakes.

The 17 March marks the death of Saint Patrick and has been considered a religious holiday in Ireland for more than 1500 years.

Go green

The origin of Saint Patrick's Day, the associated color was blue. Today we wear green, the day of the party, to symbolize the emblem of Ireland : the Clover. And beware of the one who does not wear green that day, it is a tradition to be respected. St. Patrick's Day is gradually taking over other cities around the world, what created “Global Greening”. This event consists in illuminating the most famous monuments of the world like : the tower of Pisa, the Moulin Rouge or the Empire State Building, green of course.
