Identify and map the potential of investments for agricultural water for small producers. This is the objective of the mission of a team of international experts from the FAO of 11 to the 16 April 2016.
In fact, Madagascar is part of the beneficiary countries of the IFAD-funded project (International Agricultural Development Fund) to strengthen the efficiency and sustainability of irrigation investment in order to fight against poverty. But its insufficient availability and climate variability are often constraints on the production of millions of agricultural producers.
Priority areas.
For Madagascar, the implementation of this project for three years is conducted by FAO in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture. The first year is focused on the identification of the needs of the agricultural water management and identification of priority technologies in the context of poverty reduction. Three technologies are thus prioritized for the big island at the end of this first phase. It comes to agro-ecological techniques, drip irrigation and rice-fish culture. The second year of the project, This year, focuses on the use of a mapping tool for decision support (OAD) based on geographic information system (GIS) in order to target priority areas for agricultural investments. Synergy of actions. On the other hand, the scale of investment in agricultural water management, is a prerequisite to significantly reduce poverty nationally and will require a synergy of actions with all stakeholders in the sector. « At the end of this project, a vast construction still awaits the country, and will require substantial resources.
